My brother was a person that enjoyed and created art his whole life. Don’s drawings, sketches or paintings of real life subjects were wonderful. Don had a great admiration for the realism of the old masters and many of the new ones. However, Don seemed to prefer more abstract designed and colored creations. He was also a person who did not accept praise and acceptance of himself of his creations easily, if at all. It is to be expected that your family might rave over something you create. However, when others also admire, praise, and understand your work, it can have a much more profound response. This is exactly what the CSA Annual Art Show did for my brother.
During some of the more challenging times of Don’s life, he found writing and creating artwork to be helpful. Don displayed some of his art in his apartment, which caught the eye of his CSA staff, and the idea for the Art Show was born. The creation of art as a means of having an expressive outlet was not unique to just Don. At the time, however, he was in need of having a way to ‘put himself out there’, connect with people, and hopefully grasp the validity of the positive response he would receive. That was just what happened. Don was so pleased that what appealed to him as an artist also appealed to many others. Even the years his work was not as successful, Don enjoyed the experience and even accepted the thoughtful suggestions and critiques of the judges. Don also enjoyed the feeling of fellowship it gave him with the other artists who presented their creations. Don would be pleased to be remembered as having helped inspire this event.
